Cooking with Kids Safety Tips

  1. Always supervise the kids closely while cooking—and kids, always remember to ask your parents for permission before heading for the kitchen to cook.
  2. Wash hands thoroughly before beginning (and after every sneeze, cough, and bathroom visit!), and make sure that all preparation areas are clean and dry before using them.
  3. Wear something to protect clothes. Avoid loose sleeves or anything that can catch or get in the way. And tie back long hair.
  4. Watch the water, and other liquids. Wipe up spills and keep electrical appliances away from water. Don’t add cold water to a hot pan, and always open a hot pot carefully with the lid pointing away so the steam won’t burn you.
  5. Don't sample uncooked products made from raw eggs (including cookie dough!) since raw eggs are a primary source of salmonella.
  6. Teach kids knife safety: Knives should be visible, never hidden under a dishtowel or in soapy water. You should always cut away, never towards yourself. Never point a knife at others and make sure your child’s ability and skill is matched to the cutting instrument.
  7. Practice safe food handling: Keep hot foods hot and cold foods cold. Be careful to avoid cross-contamination of raw and cooked foods.
  8. Create a safe and comfortable place for kids to cook, at a lower height if necessary. Use a stool only if you’re sure your kids can balance safely on it.
  9. Make sure pot handles are pointing inward so they can't be bumped or jostled.
  10. Make certain your kitchen has a first aid kit and a fire extinguisher.
