Cooking with Kids Safety Tips
- Always supervise the kids closely while cooking—and kids, always remember to ask your parents for permission before heading for the kitchen to cook.
- Wash hands thoroughly before beginning (and after every sneeze, cough, and bathroom visit!), and make sure that all preparation areas are clean and dry before using them.
- Wear something to protect clothes. Avoid loose sleeves or anything that can catch or get in the way. And tie back long hair.
- Watch the water, and other liquids. Wipe up spills and keep electrical appliances away from water. Don’t add cold water to a hot pan, and always open a hot pot carefully with the lid pointing away so the steam won’t burn you.
- Don't sample uncooked products made from raw eggs (including cookie dough!) since raw eggs are a primary source of salmonella.
- Teach kids knife safety: Knives should be visible, never hidden under a dishtowel or in soapy water. You should always cut away, never towards yourself. Never point a knife at others and make sure your child’s ability and skill is matched to the cutting instrument.
- Practice safe food handling: Keep hot foods hot and cold foods cold. Be careful to avoid cross-contamination of raw and cooked foods.
- Create a safe and comfortable place for kids to cook, at a lower height if necessary. Use a stool only if you’re sure your kids can balance safely on it.
- Make sure pot handles are pointing inward so they can't be bumped or jostled.
- Make certain your kitchen has a first aid kit and a fire extinguisher.
